Call for Greater Involvement by Delhi Police in Senior Citizen Affairs

"Highlight need to implement Parent Rights Act more diligently", senior citizens demand   

A state-level meeting of the Delhi Police Advisory Body was held at the Delhi Police headquarters under the Chairmanship of Shri Alok Kumar, Joint  Commissioner of Police (Crime) February 26, 2018 to discuss Safety and Security of senior citizens, identification and registration of senior citizens living alone, conducting security audit, creation of awareness about the Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 and the role of senior citizens associations in the safety and security of senior citizens.

Eminent senior citizens from across Delhi participated along with several A.C.Ps/Additional D.C.Ps level officers of all the Districts including Traffic Police.

On behalf of Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi citizens, J.R. Gupta, Chairperson, raised vital issues concerning safety and security of senior citizens. He also sought the intervention of Chairman for the inordinate delay on the part of Police Stations of Karol Bagh and Paschim Vihar in the cases of two widows who have been thrown out by their daughters-in- law from their own self-acquired properties.

He offered his full support for holding a big conclave of senior citizens to create awareness about the Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. This offer was appreciated by the Chairman and assured to convey the date in due course.

The members present also pointed out about the traffic problems including encroachments in their respective colonies. Shri J.R. Gupta also raised the issue regarding encroachments of service lane facing Africa Avenue, Safdarjung Enclave by Mahindra Car Showroom, old car dealers and Nova Hospital and even the residents have to wait sometime for hours due to congestion of traffic in the service lane in spite of complaints to local traffic police.

He further informed that a function was organized in association with Delhi Police (Eastern Range )on 13/05/2017 at Maharaja Agrasen College, Vasundhra Enclave in which more than 1200 Senior Citizens participated . Even the Senior Citizens Council of Delhi organized a special function on 15-06-2017 at its Recreation Centre, Green Park Extension on the occasion of World Elders  Abuse Awareness Day in which the then DCP (South) Shri Ishwar Singh interacted with senior citizens.

He also showed his concern that only 30,759  names were registered, while more than 1 lakh senior citizens across Delhi are residing alone. The beat Constables should also visit the lonely senior citizens at least twice in a week. The members also suggested to have monthly meetings at SHO Level and after every 3 months at the level of DCP regularly. After hearing the views of all the members, Shri Alok Kumar, assured to take remedial measures and further agreed to address the senior citizens for creating awareness of Parents Act, 2007.  On behalf of Delhi Police, it was also conveyed that any lonely senior citizen who wants to get registered can do so by filling the form online or call helpline Number 1291.

Holi Milan on 02-03-2018 at Recreation Centre

The Senior Citizens Council of Delhi organised Holi Millan with Chandan without using colours and gulal on 02-03-2018 at its Centre. On this occasion, a cultural programme was performed by the artists. Acharya Dhananjay Mishra of Prayag also recited songs based on Vrindavan Holi. Sh. Govind Goel, a Senior Advocate of Supreme Court briefed about aims and objectives of Nayay Chaupal for solving day to day problems of citizens without going to courts. Sh. Ashok  K. Aggarwal, Advocate also endorsed the cause initiated by Sh.Govind Goel. Sh. Balkrishan Aggarwal also addressed the gathering. While welcoming all the guests, J.R.Gupta, President extended Holi Greetings to all present and briefed about various free facilities being provided in the Centre. The stage was well organised by Mrs. Manjula Aggarwal, followed by refreshments.

The Council organised the first Annual Day celebrations of its Recreation Centre at Green Park Extension. Chief Guest was Mrs. Meeta Singh, Additional Commissioner, SDMC who noted the various free facilities being provided to senior citizens daily. She shared her sentiments with the audience that she now feels very happy to see that this community centre, which was vacant for the last 4-5 years, is put to such good use. "I remember Mr. Gupta came to me for the allotment of this Recreation Centre in the month of October, 2016. We handed over the allotment letter to Sh.J.R.Gupta on 4th November, 2016. This is a unique Recreation Centre being used for organising various social, cultural and spiritual activities for the cause and care of elderly on a daily basis. Moreover, various free facilities like  Physiotherapy, Blood sugar test, Computer Training, Yoga Classes, Library, Newspapers, Television, Carom Board, Chess, Ludo, health checkup camps, consultations from eminent doctors & Spiritual Discourses are being availed daily by senior citizens " .

Joint Birthday Celebrations

The Council has celebrated Joint Birthday of its 19 life members on last Sunday of the month i.e. on 25th February, 2018. An entertainment programme was also organized in which many female and male members recited poems, bhajans, songs etc. Acharya Shiv Kumar Suman of Bareli also recited birthday songs and paravchan based on Ramayana. Sh. Narendra Kumbhat also delivered a talk on financial problems and solutions. The birthdays of such senior citizens are celebrated whose children have no time even to talk to them. Moreover, a common platform is also provided by the Council to them to highlight their hidden talents. The concerned members were felicitated with flowers, shawl and gift as a token of respect and regards. J.R.Gupta , President extended birthday greetings to them and prayed to all mighty God for their long life with sound health.
