Alwal RWAs Mobilise Political Support for Lake Protection

Organise all party meet to discuss issue and take up with concerned authorities

The Greater Alwal Allied Service Association held an All Party Meeting to elicit opinions of major political parties in resolving the pollution and encroachments in Chinna Raya Lake of Alwal.

Opening the meeting, Dr G V Rao, General Secretary outlined their efforts since 2007, with offices of GHMC, Collector, then Minister Sri Harish Rao, etc. for protection and development of Chinna Raya Lake.

Dr Rao was very appreciative of Sri T Harish Rao who was very prompt in accepting the demands to protect the Lake and his granting of funds for its development. However Dr Rao squarely blamed Sri Shekhar Reddy, present Superintendent Engineer, Lakes Division GHMC who was misusing his official powers. Further Dr Rao said that Mr Reddy made false statements before the Collector only to see that no works like FTLs fixation, diversion of drainage was carried out. Further, he claimed non existing restraining Orders of the Court, the proof of which he never produced.

Mr Nandikanti Sridhar speaking on behalf of Congress party outlined the history of the lake its utility in earlier days. Mr Sridhar suggested that the drainage inflows into the lake be diverted and desiltation be done which would revive the Lake. He promised to meet Mr K T Rama Rao Minister, to develop the lake.

Further, Mr Srinivas Varma, speaking on behalf of Lok Satta Party suggested the GHMC should not allow dumping of debris into the lake and the nomination of GAASA members in Lake Protection Committee of GHMC for proper development of the Lake. He suggested that Rainwater should be allowed into the lake and drainage water diverted away. Further Mr Varma also sought removal of Mr Shekhar Reddy as Superintendent Engineer of Lakes Division whom he held directly responsible for destruction of the Lake and sought the appointment of a duty-minded officer. Mr Sai Prasad of BJP party, suggested that such meetings on the Chinna Raya Lake should be conducted on regular basis and with greater intensity. He assured all help from State and Central Agencies through his party. The official representative of the ruling TRS party could not attend the meeting.

Mr Santosh Sagar of TDP suggested that local committee at GHMC Circle level be constituted consisting of all members from all political parties for lake protection. He too strongly suggested that the present Superintending Engineer of GHMC should be replaced by a better officer. He requested GAASA to include more colonies on the Western side of the lake, which are under theat.

Speaking on behalf of the plot owners adjacent to the Lake Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, said that they would support GAASA in protection of the Lake to the full extent of its Survey Number 248. He even suggested that they would not allow anything or anybody to hinder the efforts of the people to develop the Lake. Mr Anji Reddy of MES Colony adjacent to the Lake suggested that bunding of the Lake and desiltation need to be taken up on an urgent basis. Mr Srikanth President of Anand Rao Nagar Colony proposed that an agitation or rally every month to all political leaders and GHMC officers should be adopted until the Lake was protected.

Closing the meeting Sri Santokh Singh President of GAASA suggested that all citizens should be together in this long fight even if means to take legal remedies against concerned officers.

Vizag RWAs to Take up Programme to Increase Awareness on Need for Water Conversation

Nearly 10 members of APFERWAS including President, two Vice Presidents and four Zonal coordinators had a meeting with SE Water Works, GVMC Sri. Pallam Raju, along with EEs of all Zones, at RTC Complex  on 22nd April.

The SE as well as the EEs of respective zones patiently answered all our queries about the general condition of water availability and distribution. They also took note of the specific cases of water deficiency, leakages, pollution, mixing of drinking water and drainage water, timing of supply, etc., at different wards of Gajuwaka, MVP, Dasapalla and other areas. They assured us of immediate action to correct these lapses.

They also explained the procedure and tentative estimate for applying a fresh water connection. In general the SE is of the opinion that there is no water crisis as such right now and that they might cross through the summer without any problem. They informed that special steps are being taken for distribution of water to high deficiency areas like slums, hilly areas. We brought to their notice the abnormal charges collected by private contractors for supply of water through trucks. They have given one Toll Free and two Land numbers to order for a tanker from GVMC at the rate of just Rs.450/- for 5,000 litre tanker.

APFERWAS from their side assured to take up a major Awareness Program to the RWAs of different colonies about the conservation measures during the summer through distribution of pamphlets and posters in the colonies as well as at the Chalivendrams being established by GVMC at different places in the city.
