Tarnaka kicks off nine-day flower festival with fervor

Notwithstanding the all-pervasive election mood, residents in the Tarnaka colonies kicked off the festive navaratris with fervor grouping together for the state festival Bathukamma, with beautiful floral arrangements.

The difference this year round is that it is with a combination of the dandia ras that some of them are celebrating along with Bathukamma.

Bathukamma, is celebrated every year as per the Shalivahana calendar for nine days starting Bhadrapada Amavasya (also known as Mahalaya Amavasya or Pitru Amavasya) till Durgashtami.

It represents the cultural spirit of Telangana with each of the nine days being observed unique seasonal flowers most of them with medicinal values, in seven concentric layers in the shape of temple gopuram.

A fairly large gathering of women residents kicked off the festival on Tuesday, October 9, with the Engli pula bathukammas at the Community Place in Gokulnagar, Nagarjuna Nagar and at our local corporator Ms Saraswati Alakunta’s residence.
